The 40’s saw an increase in the use of color, influenced by Hollywood movies, as well as the first real introduction of women into the workforce. While the men were once again away at war, women had to roll up their sleeves and go to work. During World War II, women were advised to “put their best face forward.” Studies proved that makeup helped to boost morale despite spartan conditions. With a shortage of ingredients, women made do with boot polish for mascara, and rose petals soaked in wine for blush, to maintain their feminine appearance whatever their circumstances.
