Beauty first acquired contemporary meaning in the 60’s. With the loosening of social constraints, and the creative explosion of the era, makeup was intended to look healthy and sexy as the 50’s notions of chic were replaced by the pursuit of everlasting youthfulness that characterized the new decade. Long hair was allowed to flow freely, eyelashes were extra-long, and geometric haircuts were a radical departure from the hairstyles that had come before.
